Joint Research TANDEM - Center of Excellence for Technology and Engineering in Medicine
LUEBECK: City of Science 2012!
Title of Course: Fluid Dynamics in Medical Technology
Exam number: XM 2820 (required course), XM 3040 (elective)
Length of course: 2 hours per week
Type of course: lecture
Language: English
Lecturer: Dr. Klapproth
Learning outcome:
Students know the most important aspects of fluid dynamics considering the rheological characteristics of blood. The aspired knowledge qualifies the students to dimension, design and develop blood systems including the knowledge of blood-damaging factors. Knowledge about lecturer´s current research projects
Course Requirements: Basic knowledge in analysis, physics (mechanics), physiology in particular heart and blood-circulation
Content: Introduction into the fluid dynamics (from the definition of pressure to the characterisation of laminar and turbulent flow), comparison newtonic vs. non-newtonic fluids, blood rheology (various models), blood sensitivity (shearing, negative pressure gradients, factors inducing haemolysis, factors activating the clotting system), introduction into the design of fluidic systems with blood contacting surfaces.
